SBIRT: Referring to Mutual Support Groups

Description:  The “Referral to Treatment” or “RT” portion of the SBIRT protocol is essential to ensuring clients with unhealthy drinking patterns receive the services they need to reduce their risk of experiencing alcohol-related problems with their health, family or at work.  Mutual support groups provide a common space for individuals who are struggling in similar ways to get support.  This free webinar outlines the ways in which mutual support groups can be beneficial to clients with unhealthy drinking patterns and how to select the most appropriate option based on the client’s needs.  It also details the various mutual support group options available and how to connect clients to them.

Presenter:

Shari Allwood (photographed with her granddaughter Sydney) is the Executive Director of SMART Recovery, which is a not-for-profit organization whose purpose is to help individuals gain independence from addictive behavior and lead meaningful and satisfying lives, and to support the availability of choices in recovery. She is delighted to join us to represent the importance of being aware of the wide variety of mutual support groups that can be recommended to EAP professional’s clients.  Shari acknowledges that “of the program options, not one specific recovery program is likely to be helpful to all, and the best recovery outcomes occur when people know and have access to a variety of programs and are free to choose among them.”
